Garmin Maps and Software for Australia
Garmin have the best vector maps available in Australia.
If you ever want to leave the hard top, you would know all the other GPS (and the default garmin maps (City Navigator, also in this post) become patchy and innacurate. The more bush you go, the less use it is.
Thanks to Garmin having a very complete topographic map available (Australian Topo, in this post) you can now have autorouting and contour lines almost anywhere you can drive (or walk).
For more accuracy in very descolate areas, a non-routeable topographic map is available (OzTopo v2.1b, in this post). Pair that map with 5 Meter Contours (In this post) and you have the most complete and accurate vector topographic map there is for Australia.

Going off shore, your Garmin may continue to be of use, just load up Bluecharts Pacific Charts, and have vector charts on your Garmin Device.

Don’t forget the free maps available, Shonky, T4A, NZOpenGPS.

Get yourself a Bluetooth Receiver (Best at this stage would be the Garmin 18x, or MTKII, followed by the SirF Star III) or Garmin Device (Any, be it eTrex, Nuvi, so on), and enjoy the best vector maps to offer.
